About the work <Memories flow>
Culture is nurtured on the land. Culture does not migrate; it is humans who migrate. Cultural memory, which built on the operation of social mechanism, plays a crucial part to collective self identification. Therefore it maintains consistency through centuries. Based on the concept of social change in Taiwan from generation to generation, Solar Site Dance Theatre’s work “Memories Flow” observes how the society, where people used to establish strong bonds with hometown and people, rapidly transforms into one of objectification and alienation after economy developed and technology got involved.
The work “Memories Flow” is consisted of two parts, demonstrating diverse aspects and experiences of life. The first part is a musical-like choreographed performance by professional dancer Wang Kuo-Chuan. By using nostalgic objects, taste memory and singing, Wang’s fluent and expressive movement vocabulary draws the audience back into the time when people were more united and bonding together and into his own life phases from naive young to sophisticated mature age.The second part, led by Cheng Hsiao-Lan with a younger generation of dancers, expresses the absurd and helplessness humans need to face in the alienated environment impossible to escape from in the era of technology.
Social structure and cultural transformation develop fiercely in Taiwan. When people enjoy the convenience in life, we somehow feel empty inside standing on this solid ground. Solar Site Dance Theatre’s 2021 work “Memories Flow” attempts to travel through the river of time, listen among the mist of sorrow and joy, write in the flow of memories, bearing the anticipation of modern civilization in the past and responding to the comprehension of existence after technology has been developed.
